Wow, this is a historic breakthrough for the trans community.  We have been fighting against the use of "transface" actors for a long time and no matter how good a job the Letos and Redmaynes of the world have been, is it right for Hollywood to cast actors that don't fit in the LGBTQ categories they portray?

Let's look at the history of replacing minorities with more privileged actors.

Blackface was a performance tradition in the American theater for roughly 100 years beginning about 1830.

Stereotypes embodied in the stock characters of blackface minstrels not only played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist images, attitude, and perceptions worldwide, but also in popularizing black culture. Another view is that "blackface" is a form of cross-dressing in which one puts on the insignias of a sex, class or race that stands in opposition to one's own.

The term "Transface" refers to a straight or hetero actor portraying a trans person.  The argument is this:

Should trans actors be the only ones to portray trans roles?

I have read a fair amount on the subject and while I can see both sides to the argument I believe that act of acting should go to whomever has the most talent regardless of what the role is.  This being said, there is a great need for Hollywood and other film artists to open the field to include the long forgotten trans actors.

Yes we are seeing an increase in trans representation in cinema but it is still far behind what it should be.

Let me know what you think on this subject and see you next Tuesday.

By the way, if you want to see more on the subject, I highly recommend the movie Disclosure staring Laverne Cox and many more of us.  You can find it on Netflix.  Enjoy.
